Agronomist says July reveals the ‘sins of planting’

An agronomist says mistakes made during planting are evident.

Michael Fosdick covers eastern Iowa for Pioneer and says some growers faced short planting windows and less than ideal conditions this spring.

“There was a lot of work to get done, and there’s times when the envelope has to get pushed.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the Corteva Research Farm in Johnston, Iowa Thursday, he said consecutive years with strong yields also left a lot of residue at planting.

“And so when we get to this time of year in July, you can sometimes see where those sins of planting come back to haunt us. Whether that’s an underdeveloped root system due to soil compaction or side compaction.”

Despite the early season challenges, Fosdick says expectations are for a good crop.
