Agronomist says more intensive soil sampling can improve profitability
A technical agronomist says good knowledge of soil health can help farmers improve profitability.
Buck Brazeale with BW Fusion tells Brownfield timely, efficient application of fertilizer is crucial.
“Not overloading the system is so important. Putting all your nitrogen up front, that overloads the system and gets things out of balance. If we can balance that out throughout the year, what we’ll be able to do is create a plant that is more tolerant to stress, and we’re just going to make a better overall plant that’s going to help yield,” he says.
Brazeale says farmers should also consider more intensive soil sampling.
“We probably, as an industry, overapply a little bit of a fertilizer to be on the safe side. The more we can be efficient with the dollars spent and know what we’re truly getting out of every dollar of fertilizer, that’s what’s going to be the difference between guys that make break even, or actually make good ROI this year,” he says.
Brazeale says BW Fusion uses a zone sampling method to help create a detailed, field-specific soil profile.
Brownfield interviewed Brazeale at the 2024 Nebraska Ag Expo in Lincoln, Nebraska.
