Agronomist warns growers to stay ahead of corn rootworm this season

An agronomy expert says growers should prioritize pest management during the 2026 growing season.

“The biggest thing in the Midwest is corn rootworm,” he said. “That’s going to be the number one problem up there.”
He says corn rootworm has become increasingly problematic the last several years.
“The biggest problem is the standability and lodging,” Huckabay said. “When those rootworms get in there and start eating the roots, as the plants get taller they start to fall over because there’s just no root system to feed them.”
University of Minnesota Extension crop specialist Anthony Hanson recently told Brownfield that cold weather the last few months isn’t expected to have much of an impact on overwintering crop pests.
