Agronomists meet with farmers impacted by damaging hail
Hail damaged crops was the focus of an Iowa State Extension meeting near Pella, Iowa on Monday.
ISU agronomist Rebecca Vittetoe tells Brownfield a recent hail event impacted many central and southern Iowa growers and crop damage has been variable.
“On the corn side, some of what we were seeing was 50-to-60% defoliation on those plants,” Vittetoe said. “On the soybean side, we need to take into account the potential for nodes broke on those soybeans as well as the defoliation.”
ISU agronomist Meaghan Anderson says farmers across the country that have experienced damaging weather challenges need to scout consistently heading into fall.
“If there’s damage to ears and pods on our corn and our soybeans, we don’t likely want to store that grain for a long time,” Anderson said. “And so we want to know how to handle that in advance of harvest.”
Anderson says a grower’s first priority is to contact their crop insurance agent.
