AI innovation creating additional privacy concerns in agriculture
An ag attorney says the increased use of artificial intelligence is creating additional data privacy concerns.
Todd Janzen is a managing partner with Janzen Schroeder Ag Law.
“It takes a lot of data to train these AI tools,” he says. “Companies need to make sure that they’re licensing that data from farmers, if they’re the ones providing that training data. Is AI able to see things in data that farmers may not want them to see?”
He tells Brownfield there are tools available like the Ag Data Transparency Evaluator to help the industry create platforms that can properly store farm data.
“As AI becomes bigger, it’s important to have an initiative out there,” he says. “It’s trying to protect farmers from having their data misappropriated or used by companies in a way that they don’t understand or don’t anticipate.”
Janzen says developing sound policy around the use of AI could help farmers utilize the technology in the future.
