AISWCD names new executive director
The new executive director of the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts (AISWCD) says supporting local staff and reaching new audiences are at the top of his priority list.
Dr. Michael Woods tells Brownfield…
“It’s not only elevating or leveraging those federal funds and those state funds,” he says, “but it’s making sure that they’re put into supporting the staff on the front lines that will put those practices to play.”
He says there are opportunities, and a need, for soil and water conservation districts to reach new audiences…
“Even as we look at board development, we need to look at new individuals to serve on the boards in our local communities as well, because we have a shortage of board members, we need to see that locally led voice take place,” he says.
Woods, who most recently served as the manager of the Division of Natural Resources within the Illinois Department of Agriculture, believes SWCD’s are a key to meeting the state’s nutrient management goals. Of his previous experience he says…
“I think it helps me have a deeper understanding and appreciation for what maybe our state officials have to navigate in order to make those investments coming over into this position.” He says, “I’ve had a good working relationship with the current administration, and I hope that just continues on.”
Woods was appointed to the position earlier this year, and says he brings a long-running passion for conservation to the role…
“Grew up on a family farm.” He says, “We really promoted conservation and I think I’ve always had an inkling to be attached to the land in some way and this opportunity allows me to continue to protect and preserve the most important aspects of our agricultural industry and that’s our soil and our water.”
Woods succeeds Grant Hammer, who announced his departure from the association effective the end of 2023.
