American Farmland Trust is helping farmers combat climate change
A leader with American Farmland Trust says a working lands initiative is allowing farmers to be part of the climate change solution.
Jimmy Daukas is a senior program officer with American Farmland Trust.
“We believe that you have to protect the best land to ensure that we have a future to produce our food and you need to do that by protecting farmland and promoting smart growth,” he says.
He tells Brownfield keeping farmland in production and improving soil health will help farmers reduce their carbon footprint and become more productive.
“We just have to think about what we’re doing on the soils to try to improve the soil organic matter, the soil health, and that sequesters carbon but it also creates more resiliency,” he says.
Daukas says American Farmland Trust joined other ag and conservation groups for learning lab in Washington D.C. recently.
