An opportunity for a farm bill in 2025
The Chairman of the House Ag Committee says there’s a path forward to get a farm bill this year.
Glenn “GT” Thompson says right now, the goal is to move the farm bill in two parts. The first is budget reconciliation, which Thompson calls a down payment on it. “We are investing more dollars in certain areas,” he says. “I’ll give you one example, trade. The doubling of trade that makes it past the Byrd bath in the Senate.” He says that would allow the bill to pass with 50+1 votes.
Thompson says that would then leave a more pared-down farm bill, with less controversial payfors, to be passed later. “Which will allow the important parts that we can’t put in budget reconciliation, we can get those done in a very affordable way,” he says.
He says if the elements are passed independently, the policy would be rejoined and become the new five-year farm bill.
