A past president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association says he’s optimistic about the direction of the U.S. hog industry.

Matt Gent has a farrow-to-finish operation near Wellman in Washington County. “It’s hard not to recognize the tough economic times the industry had over the past couple years. As we’ve worked our way through that we’re in a brighter spot today.”

He tells Brownfield there’s always challenges to tackle, but the markets have been favorable for producers. “Our industry still needs to prove itself that we can hold this momentum that we have. We’ve moved the needle on pork demand and supply. It’s pretty exciting times in my opinion.”

Gent says pork demand was exceptionally strong during the final quarter of 2024, which came as a pleasant surprise for pork producers.

He spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 Iowa Pork Congress in Des Moines.
