An optimistic outlook on trade with Mexico
A southern Indiana farmer says maintaining key export markets is crucial to profitability for producers.
Matthew Lucas is the vice president of the Indiana Corn Marketing Council.
“That is the biggest concern for ag producers,” he says. “How these tariffs are going to unfold on US products moving into Mexico. Is pork going to be part of that? Is corn going to be part of that? How are they going to try to retaliate?”
He tells Brownfield he’s optimistic about the future of trade with Mexico following a recent trade mission.
“Mexico imports about 40% of their meat products and of that 40%, 80% is originating from the US,” he says. “Just because we’re exporting meat down here doesn’t mean that doesn’t affect outcomes for grain producers. It takes grain to feed the cattle and hogs that we are sending down here.”
Lucas says he’s hopeful the two countries can continue their mutually beneficial trade relationship.
