Animal Agriculture Alliance talks environmental progress

The Animal Agriculture Alliance’s latest Sustainability Impact Report is highlighting carbon reduction efforts in the livestock sector.

Communications specialist Emily Solis tells Brownfield the report coincides with Earth Day to show animal agriculture’s progress on environmental stewardship.

“Sustainability is not a destination, it’s a continuous journey, so while we’re very proud of the progress that we’ve made up to this point, we know that there’s more that we can do and should be done,” she shares.

U.S. livestock production accounts for four percent of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions and Solis says on-farm practices are underway to make reductions.

“One of the biggest production practices that we’re seeing used across a lot of different species groups is the recycling of litter and manure and finding alternative purposes for those products,” she says.

Pork production accounts for 0.3 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and by 2030 the industry plans to cut emissions by 40 percent from a 2015 baseline.

The beef industry is striving for carbon-neutral or better by 2040 and dairy has set a target of 2050.
