Annual Global Hunger Index shows uneven progress

The 2017 Global Hunger Index highlighted uneven progress in reducing hunger. Although global hunger has fallen more than a quarter since 2000, hunger levels increased in several countries this year.

In Africa, the Central African Republic is in the “extremely alarming” category and it has the same score it did in 2000. Sri Lanka and Venezuela have higher hunger levels than in the past.

The report says the level of hunger in developing countries has decreased by 27 percent since 2000.

The director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute says the uneven progress highlights why the UN has to continue to work toward its Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger by 2030.

The International Food Policy Research Institute calculates the Global Hunger Index each year.
