Another option for managing weeds without herbicides
A mechanical weed specialist says there are benefits from moving away from herbicides to control weeds.
Sam Oschwald Tilton is helping growers make the switch to mechanical weed prevention.
“Non-chemical or physical weed control is getting a lot more interest,” he says. “Recently, the popularity of organics that only continues to grow is also because of environmental regulations that are decreasing. The herbicides that are becoming less available and also a huge problem is herbicide resistance.”
He tells Brownfield growers have options.
“There’s a whole other part of non-chemical weed management which is the ecological weed control or all of the different choices that farmers can make throughout all of their field operations to help with weeds,” he says. “That’s thinking about things like crop rotation and how that’s going to influence your weeds.”
Oschwald Tilton says fall is the best time to learn about how to implement these practices.
