Another winter blast due this week

A winter storm is expected this week after spring-like weather covered much of the Midwest this past weekend.

“This will be a wet, at least a wind-driven packing snow,” said Brownfield Meteorologist Greg Soulje. “Livestock are going to be in jeopardy here, not to mention we’re still in clean-up and recovery mode coming off the flooding.”

Canadian cold air is being pulled down to the Upper Midwest, while warm, wet weather will remain to the south of that, he said.

“You’ve got a winter storm, if not a blizzard on one side, versus severe weather prospects across parts of the Southern Plains, Ohio Valley, Mid-South and far Eastern Corn Belt as well, later on this week,” said Soulje.

The weather is going to be a threat to livestock, especially to young animals.

“Some of these winds may hit 50 to 60 miles per hour, and so white-out, blizzard conditions,” he said, “that cannot be over-emphasized in some of those High Plains areas and into sections of the Upper Midwest, too.”

Snow will stretch north of line out of Colorado tracking northeastward through the Nebraska Panhandle, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, through Minnesota, Wisconsin and to about Marquette, Michigan, said Soulje. South of that will be rain, some of it heavy.

The areas that get a foot or more of snow will be equivalent to about one or two inches of rain.
