April USDA price indices mixed

The USDA says farmers made less and paid a little bit more in April.

The index of prices received for April was down 3.6% from March, pressured by declines in hogs, market eggs, milk, and lettuce, which canceled out gains in cattle, calves, broilers, and strawberries.

The index of prices paid inched up 0.5% on increased costs for nitrogen, feeder cattle, milk cows, and hay and forages against decreases in complete feeds, feeder pigs, wages, and other services.

The dairy index for April 2025 was 4.6% below March 2025, but 3% above April 2024, with an all milk price of $21 per hundredweight, $1 less than the previous month, but $.60 more than a year ago.

Year-to-year, the index of prices received was 12% higher led by a gain in the livestock index, partially due to record cash cattle prices, while the index of prices paid was 5.8% higher.

The USDA’s updated price projections for major commodities is out June 12th.
