Arkansas planting continues

Most corn and rice in planting in Arkansas has been completed, and work continues to get the other crops in.

Ninety-two percent of the state’s corn is now planted, up 6% from last week and one percent more than the five-year average.  Eighty-three percent of the corn has already emerged.  Sixty-seven percent is rated good to excellent.

Eighty-six percent of the rice is planted with 70% emerged.  Planting is behind last year but ahead of the five-year average.  Seventy-three percent is rated good to excellent.

Thirty-six percent of the cotton has been planted, 23% more than a week ago and close to the five-year average.  Twelve percent of the cotton has emerged.

Peanut planting progress almost doubled in the past week, with 20% now planted and 9% emerged.

Sixty-nine percent of soybeans are planted, up 11% from a week ago and 14% ahead of average.  Forty-eight percent of the soybeans have emerged.

Forty percent of the sweet potatoes are planted.

Eighty-five percent of winter wheat has headed, and 24% of that is coloring.

Forty percent of hay is in good condition, with 5% rated excellent and 45% rated fair.

Considerable rain statewide has soil moisture levels rated 27% surplus, 66% adequate, and 6% short.
