Arkansas reports good corn, soybeans, excellent peanut crop so far

A mostly-dry week allowed farmers in Arkansas to work in the fields.

USDA says topsoil moisture levels are 6% surplus, 50% adequate, 36% short, and 8% very short with comparable subsoil moisture levels.

Half of the corn crop in Arkansas is in good condition, with 25% rated excellent and 19% rated fair.  Ninety-nine percent of the corn is silking, with 77% in the dough stage and 55% dented.  Six percent of the corn is already mature.

Forty-five percent of the cotton is rated good and another 34% rated excellent.  Ninety-three percent of the cotton is squaring, with 70% setting bolls, and 1% now have the bolls opening.

Fifty-three percent of the Arkansas soybeans are in good condition, with 16% rated excellent and 25% rated fair.  Ninety-four percent of the beans are blooming with 78% now setting pods.  Just one percent of the soybeans have started coloring.

Second-crop hay is 46% finished with 52% of the hay in good condition.

Forty-nine percent of the peanut crop is rated excellent, with 42% rated good.  Eighty-eight percent of the peanuts are pegging.
