ASA closely monitoring port strike threats

A leader with the American Soybean Association says she’s concerned about the threat of a port strike and its potential impact on the soy industry.

ASA director of government affairs Alexa Combelic says a shutdown of East and Gulf Coast export facilities would disrupt the U.S. supply chain. “These are the ports that are shipping goods via container,” she said. “While most soybeans are sent via bulk shipment, we have over two and a half million metric tons of soybeans that are shipped via container.”

The International Longshoremen’s Association recently threatened to strike if a new collective bargaining agreement couldn’t be reached with the U.S. Maritime Alliance by the end of September.

Combelic tells Brownfield the impact would be felt in other areas of agriculture. “We see a lot of livestock here that’s shipped via container,” she said. “In addition, this will impact inputs coming in at those ports as well as farm equipment.”

Union leaders have said a potential strike would begin October 1st.
