Assessing a fertilizer budget

An agronomist says farmers have been assessing their fertilizer budgets.

Stephanie Zelinko with AgroLiquid says, “We’re dealing with a questionable marketplace where we have high interest rates, high input prices, but still those low commodity prices. We’ve been talking with guys about going back to the basics understanding good agronomy and using that to make their fertility plan for the year.”

She tells Brownfield it’s important to start with realistic yield expectations. “Everybody wants to get high yielding corn or soybeans, but when we’re dealing with an economic time we need to fertilize where we think we can really get a good yield goal.”

Zelinko says some growers may have to cut back on in-season applications.

She spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 Commodity Classic.
