Assessing potential tariff impacts

An ag economist says he’s concerned about the potential impacts President Trump’s tariff threats could have on the ag industry.

University of Missouri’s Ben Brown says, “This is an area where frankly I do worry a little bit. If this does go into place this coming Saturday and we see kind of an escalation, do we see Mexican buyers cancel their U.S. corn shipments?”

He tells Brownfield Mexico is a major trading partner for U.S. corn growers. “It does concern me how much corn they have purchased that remains unshipped. Substantial amounts of corn that have not been shipped.”

President Trump has said he expects to issue 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada starting February 1st.

Brown made his comments on a recent episode of Brownfield’s Weekly Commodity Market Update, which can be viewed below.
