Assessing the brief U.S.-Colombia dispute

An ag economist says he’s keeping a close eye on tensions between the U.S. and Colombia.

University of Missouri’s Ben Brown says Colombia is a major importer of U.S. ethanol. “Ethanol trade with Colombia is a growing industry. We’ve seen some movement on that front the last couple years with the Colombian government willing to buy U.S.-based ethanol products.”

President Trump recently paused his threat of Colombian tariffs and sanctions after the two countries reached a deal on the deportation of undocumented immigrants from the U.S.

He tells Brownfield Colombia is one of the United States’ biggest trading partners in Latin America. “They are a nice market that we want to continue to maintain in some capacity,” Brown said. “We want fair trade, but we certainly don’t want them looking to Brazil as a potential source because that would be geographically friendly.”

Brown spoke during the most recent Weekly Commodity Market Update.
