Baldwin says proposed SNAP cuts impact farmers, state budgets

A Wisconsin Senator opposed to reconciliation bill cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program says farmers would be hurt as well as low-income families.

Democrat Tammy Baldwin tells Brownfield in her state alone, farm direct food sales to pantries and nutrition programs are impacted.  “Those have had significant impacts on farms throughout the State of Wisconsin, in fact, those cuts affected directly about 300 farms that lost that business.”

Baldwin says proposals to shift some of the SNAP program costs to the states would leave many states with a huge financial problem.  “The idea that we would put millions of dollars of burden on states to make up for a federal cut in SNAP after many of those states have completed their budget process is pretty unworkable.”

The so-called big, beautiful bill funding the government might see a vote in the Senate today, but many amendment proposals are expected.
