BASF: early soybean diseases emerging following excessive moisture

Wet conditions are resulting in early season soybean disease pressure.

BASF technical service representative Mike Probst says excessive rains in parts of the Midwest and Delta spawned seedling diseases.

“And we did see some of those early in the year, which is not a surprise given that some of these soybeans were planted so early and then had so much rain on them afterwards.”

He tells Brownfield seed treatments have been somewhat effective limiting diseases like Rhizoctonia and Pythium.

“However, we are not done evaluating our seed treatments, in my opinion. We’ve had the weather that is going to be really conducive for things like Red Crown Rot and Sudden Death Syndrome. The problem is we don’t really have a full understanding of how well we controlled those until we get to the end of the year.”

Probst encourages growers to continue scouting and use foliar fungicides if disease is present.
