BASF: Over-the-top dicamba not likely in 2025

A technical services representative with BASF says farmers should find an alternative to over-the-top dicamba herbicide in soybeans for 2025.

Mike Probst, who covers the southern half of Illinois for the company, says reauthorization of the product’s label is currently in the hands of the EPA.

“And there’s potentially over a year that it could take for those labels to get finalized.”  He says, “I think the more likely scenario is that we will not have those dicamba labels for over-the-top use for next year.”

He says farmers should focus on early season weed control options.

“I think that makes it even more important to make sure that no weeds get out of the ground to start out with, because if we don’t have that dicamba,” he says, “that does take away one option that was often used early in the season.”

Probst tells Brownfield growers can still use dicamba as a pre-plant option.

“That’s something that we’ve been able to use ahead of soybeans for years.”  He says, “The key difference there though is that it is a pre-plant herbicide. And so, depending on the rate that you use, you’re going to be looking at anywhere from a two to four week plant back along with some rain requirements in there.”

Probst says farmers will still be able to use glufosinate-based herbicides, like Liberty, in Extendflex and Enlist soybeans next year.
