Beck’s Hybrids focused on proven corn strategies

A field agronomist with Beck’s Hybrids says their Practical Farm Research (PFR) has found several proven strategies to help corn farmers maximize their returns.

Joey Heneghan tells Brownfield years of studies show planting date is key.

“Timely, good planting, on the earlier side, is a big piece of the puzzle.”  He says, “You can still grow good corn planted late, but that early planting, when planted in good conditions, is a big piece.”

He says nitrogen management practices also have an impact.

“We’ve seen a lot of big returns from that split nitrogen strategy.”  He says, “Oftentimes that’s a planting timing and a side dress timing, again, very little cost really associated with that, it’s just more of a management tactic.”

Heneghan says certain planter closing wheels can also boost corn yields.

“Anything with spiked or teeth type closing wheels has been almost a no brainer.”  He says, “It’s good for a couple of bushels and those tooth closing wheels can really help alleviate some of those compaction issues at planting time. I think it leads to better root development and ultimately gets us better yields.”

Heneghan says planting in proper conditions should be top priority, and farmers can dive deeper into Beck’s PFR corn research online.
