Being proactive against H5N1

The U.S pork industry is taking steps to protect against highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The director of animal health with the National Pork Producers Council Anna Forseth says the industry has created a guidance response plan.

“We’re focused on a lot of different aspects of a response, from surveillance to biosecurity to movement restrictions, worker safety,” she says. “We want to allow ourselves to be able to continue business.”

She tells Brownfield producers should continue to evaluate best management practices.

“We know swine are susceptible,” she says. “We know we’re at risk. Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly how it’s going to present as far as clinical signs. Just stay aware and have a good open line of communication with your veterinarian.”

Forseth says biosecurity is key to protecting the pork supply and ensuring market stability.

Brownfield interviewed Forseth at the 2025 Ohio Pork Congress.
