Better than expected harvest for North Dakota farmer

A southern North Dakota farmer says the 2024 crop year went better than expected on his farm.

Josh Gackle raises 2,800 acres of soybeans, corn, wheat, and barley near Kulm. “The soybean crop was so-so and the corn crop was pretty nice. Anytime we can finish up before Thanksgiving it feels pretty good. We avoid the winter and maybe can relax a little bit now.”

He tells Brownfield he got a head start on purchasing seed for the next growing season. “You start making those decisions late summer or early fall, so those a lot of that has been going on. Not all of it entirely. You’re never going to lock yourself in completely to one particular crop or rotation.”

Gackle, who also serves as president of the American Soybean Association, says there were a good number of dry days this fall to get most of his fieldwork done.

He spoke to Brownfield at the 2024 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.
