Better-than-expected soybean crop in eastern SD

A farmer in eastern South Dakota says soybean harvest hasn’t been too bad this fall considering portions of the crop was drowned out earlier in the growing season.

Chet Edinger tells Brownfield yields are better than expected.

“It’s above actual production history by a ways. We had a decent August for rainfall. We got 2.5 inches and that’s a nice August. We haven’t had soybeans this good since 2019, but the parts of the field where water stood is zero. That drags down the average.”

He says winter wheat is getting planted as the soybean fields are harvested.

“It is dry. We need a rain on the wheat to get it emerged. It’s going to be a tough situation if we don’t get rain in the next 30 days, but as a farmer, you’ve got to have faith.”

Edinger says corn harvest hasn’t started yet on his farm. He’s expecting a situation similar to soybeans, but not a record crop.
