Between the Rows Crop Tour projects record Michigan corn
The Corn Marketing Program of Michigan’s annual yield tour estimates are projecting a record crop for the Great Lakes state.
Research and Agronomy Director Kristin Poley tells Brownfield corn farmers could see an average of 181 bushels to the acre.
“We really have had quite the good year,” she says. “Consistent moisture has led to consistent development across the state. In the past couple of years, we’ve been seeing in field variability in corn ear development and we’re just not seeing that this year.”
Poley says USDA is projecting 177-bushel corn for Michigan which would also be a record.
She says chances for yields to diminish leading up to harvest are minimal.
P“We need moisture to continue with grain fill,” she says. “As long as we keep getting that moisture, we’ll hit our grain fill targets.”
Poley says farmers are concerned about how the large crop is impacting pricing and marketing opportunities.
The 10th annual yield tour completed nearly 380 yield checks across 36 counties with assistance from Nutrien Ag Solutions interns, the Ovid Elsie Middle School FFA Chapter, and the Sanilac County FFA Chapter.
