Biodiesel blend requirements increase in Illinois

The chairman of the Illinois Soybean Association says farmers and consumers are benefitting as the state’s biodiesel blend requirements increase.

Ron Kindred, who also farms in Logan County, says bipartisan legislation passed in 2022 continues to step up blend levels eligible for tax exemption.

“Our goal is B20 in 2026.”  He says, “As of April 1st of this year, we moved from a B14 blend to a B17 to qualify for the tax exemption.”

He tells Brownfield the transition continues to bring added soybean demand and cleaner air.

“It increases demand for soybeans of about 30 million bushels.”  He says, “You know we’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions every gallon that we burn. The higher blends we go, the more greenhouse gas emissions that we reduce. So, it’s a win-win for everybody.”

Kindred says 97% of biodiesel blends sold in Illinois in 2024 were B11 or higher.  He says the fuel’s use is expected to increase this year in the state by 100 million gallons to 400 million gallons total.
