Biodiesel industry pleased with historic RVO announcement

A member of the governing board of Clean Fuels Alliance America says the U.S. EPA’s announcement Friday of historic Renewable Volume Obligations exceeded industry expectations.

“It’s even better than what we had hoped for. This has never happened before.”

Nebraska soybean farmer Greg Anderson says the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) “Set 2” final rule marks a significant increase in obligated levels for 2026 and 2027 to over 5.5 billion gallons.

“To go from biodiesel being produced in 2005 at 124 million gallons to this year over 5 billion gallons.”  He says, “Quite a growth and the Renewable Fuel Standard is working.”

He tells Brownfield domestic clean fuel production currently uses over a billion pounds of soybean oil each month and the new RVO’s should drive even more soybean demand.   

“Every sector of the value chain needed this, from the farm gate, to the biodiesel producers and renewable diesel producers, to the crush people in between.”  He says, “Every segment was depending on a robust number. We got it, and now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and go to work.”

Anderson says the new obligations help provide certainty for an industry that has been throttled in recent years by lack of direction.  To meet the new levels, EPA estimates that biodiesel and renewable diesel production and use will need to increase by over 60 percent compared to 2025 volumes.
