Biofuel backers await congressional framework on nationwide E15

Biofuel supporters are anxiously awaiting next steps as a congressional council discusses permanent nationwide E15 language.

Minnesota Biofuels Association executive director Brian Werner tells Brownfield the E15 Rural Domestic Energy Council plans to maintain the same pillars of a compromise deal that fell apart last month.

“That a lot of the ethanol industry, farmers, farm organizations, and some of the larger oil refiners came together (on). That’s allowing year-round E15 (and) making some reforms to the small refinery exemptions.”

He suggests Congress is running out of time to pass nationwide E15 legislation this year.

“It is a mid-term election year so I think there’s really a need to get this done and get it done quickly, before electoral politics prevents action later in the year.”

Werner says the council has given itself a February 15th deadline to put forward a framework.

“We will be learning hopefully relatively shortly what that framework looks like (and) some of those details.”

And he says February 25th is when the U.S. House is supposed to consider the E15 framework.
