Biofuels integral to soybean profitability

A member of Clean Fuels Alliance America’s board of directors says biofuels are vital to his farm’s profitability.

Nebraska farmer Greg Anderson tells Brownfield, “We’re seeing at least a 13% or greater of the value of the bushel of soybeans attributed to biofuels.”  He says, “On a $10 bushel of beans that’s $1.30 that I wouldn’t have had had it not been for biodiesel and renewable diesel.”

He says the industry, which produced a record five billion gallons in 2024, is a key demand driver.

“In Nebraska, where I live, 2 new crushing plants, one’s already established and one is coming on later this summer,” he says, “they’ll take a quarter of our state soybeans, just those two plants.”

Anderson says that homegrown demand makes a difference.

“That’s really helping us.”  He says, “It’s helping our basis and keeping the value here at home.  Exports are great, but when we export the whole bean, all that value goes with it.”

Anderson says he’s hopeful clearer tax credit guidance is delivered soon, so the biofuels industry can continue its recent growth.

Brownfield spoke with Anderson at the 2025 Clean Fuels Conference in San Diego.
