Blizzard losses may qualify Minnesota producers for for federal assistance

Minnesota dairy producers impacted by a blizzard earlier this month could be eligible for disaster recovery assistance.

Minnesota Farm Service Agency state executive director Kurt Blomgren says the winter storm March 14th affected livestock health, feed supplies, transportation, and daily milk production.

“If your milk could not get picked up on the farm like it traditionally would, you maybe had to dump milk because you didn’t have storage, visit your local FSA service center and there most likely would be some programs that would fit the loss so you could be indemnified.”

He tells Brownfield there could be assistance for other losses as well.

“For instance, with the heavy snowfall perhaps if you lost a shed roof or some facility losses or livestock losses as a result, take pictures (and) record the data (like) the type of animals you may have lost of if you had to sell some at a reduced cost.”

Blomgren says producers who experience livestock deaths in excess of normal mortality or sell injured livestock at a reduced price might be eligible for the Livestock Indemnity Program.
