Bovine TB detected in northern Michigan

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says a cattle herd in northern Michigan has been confirmed with bovine tuberculosis.

The department says the herd in Iosco County was identified after a cow tested positive at a USDA-inspected processing plant, and additional animals were confirmed during an investigation at the farm where it originated.

State Veterinarian Nora Wineland says this is the first time an infected cattle herd has been detected in the county, and more testing is underway.

This is the fourth confirmed case in 2026, with the last reported detection in April.

Bovine TB is a bacterial disease that can affect all mammals, including humans, and is present in Michigan’s free-ranging white-tailed deer population.
