Broiler numbers down on week, still up on year

Broiler sets and placements remain ahead of 2024.

The USDA says 248.138 million broiler-type eggs went into incubation, down 1.138 million on the week, but still up 2% on the year, with average hatchability hanging just below 80%.

191.88 million chicks entered meat production, falling 550,000 from the previous week, but rising 3% from last year, with cumulative placements also 3% ahead of a year ago.

Those birds will start moving to market next month.

The USDA’s updated annual broiler production projection is out February 11th.

Arkansas: Sets: 25.789 million eggs, compared to 25.777 million the week before; Placements: 21.408 million head, compared to 21.404 million the prior week

Kentucky: Sets: 7.962 million eggs, compared to 7.978 million the week before; Placements: 5.922 million head, compared to 5.407 million the prior week

Missouri: Sets: 8.918 million eggs, compared to 9.017 million the week before; Placements: 5.374 million head, compared to 6.08 million the prior week

California/Tennessee/West Virginia: Sets: 15.637 million eggs, compared to 15.426 million the week before; Placements: 12.903 million head, compared to 14.236 million the prior week
