Broiler sets, placements continue to rise

Sets and placements of broiler-type eggs and chicks continue to climb above year ago levels as producers try to meet demand expectations.

The USDA says 248.518 million broiler-type eggs were placed into incubation last week, an increase of 2.748 million on the week and 3% on the year, with average hatchability improving slightly.

Placements of broiler-type chicks into meat production were reported at 190.186 million head, 1.835 million more than the previous week and 2% above last year, with most of those birds heading to market in September.

The USDA’s next set of annual broiler production projections is out August 12th.

Arkansas: Sets: 26.013 million eggs, compared to 25.828 million a week ago; Placements: 21.112 million head, compared to 19.986 million last week

Kentucky: Sets: 8.138 million eggs, compared to 8.025 million a week ago; Placements: 5.986 million head, compared to 5.877 million last week

Missouri: Sets: 8.98 million eggs, compared to 8.939 million a week ago; Placements: 5.472 million head, compared to 6.277 million last week

California/Tennessee/West Virginia: Sets: 15.049 million eggs, compared to 15.521 million a week ago; Placements: 12.327 million head, compared to 11.685 million last week
