Broiler sets, placements continue to run ahead of last year

Broiler sets and placements continue to point towards more chicken in 2025.

The USDA says 249.821 million broiler-type eggs went into incubation, down 315,000 on the week, but up 6% on the year, with the average hatchability rate holding just under 80% at 79.7%.

Placements of broiler-type chicks into meat production were reported at 192.965 million head, an increase of 4.151 million from the previous week and 3% from a year ago, with those birds heading to market starting early next year.

Cumulative placements are 2% ahead of the 2023 pace.

The USDA expects broiler production to be 47.187 billion pounds this year and rise to 47.925 billion pounds next year.

The USDA’s updated supply, demand, and production numbers are out January 10th.

Missouri: Sets: 9.157 million eggs, compared to 9.201 million the prior week; Placements: 5.734 million head, compared to 5.896 million the week before

California/Tennessee/West Virginia: Sets: 15.715 million eggs, compared to 15.683 million the prior week; Placements: 13.697 million head, compared to 14.001 million the week before
