Broiler sets, placements dip on week, rise on year

Broiler sets and placements in early 2025 continue to run ahead of the 2024 pace.

The USDA says 249.32 million broiler type eggs were set into incubation last week, falling 71,000 from the previous week, but rising 4% on the year, with average hatchability holding at 79.3%.

191.551 million chicks were placed into meat production, down 1.22 million on the week, but up 2% on the year, with cumulative placements 3% ahead of the year ago pace.

Those birds will start heading to market later this winter.

The USDA did trim their 2025 broiler production estimate because of lighter weights, but still expects this year to top last year, with the next projection out February 11th.
