Broiler sets, placements down on week, year

Broiler type egg sets and chick placements have declined for the second week in a row.

The USDA says 232.263 million eggs were placed into incubators last week, down from last week and 3% below a year ago, while average hatchability did improve slightly from a week ago.

Placements of broiler type chicks into meat production was under the previous week and also 3% below last year at 182.843 million head, with cumulative year to date placements 1% slower than 2022, implying lower broiler production.

The USDA’s next set of annual broiler production projections is out October 12th.

Comparisons for Brownfield states:

Arkansas: Sets: 23.063 million, compared to 23.565 million a week ago; Placements: 19.038 million, compared to 20.635 million last week

Kentucky: Sets: 6.464 million, compared to 6.688 million a week ago; Placements: 5.009 million, compared to 4.927 million last week

Missouri: Sets: 8.793 million, compared to 8.798 million a week ago; Placements: 12.749 million, compared to 13.078 million last year

California/Tennessee/West Virginia: Sets: 13.038 million, compared to 13.325 million a week ago; Placements: 11.5 million, compared to 11.786 million
