Another week, another year-to-year increase in broiler sets and placements.

This months-long trend in sets and placements implies higher broiler chicken production in 2024 than 2023.

The USDA says 238.202 million broiler-type eggs were set into incubation, a drop of 6.039 million on the week, but up 5% on the year, with average hatchability fractionally lower, while still holding above 79%.

183.989 million broiler-type chicks entered meat production, dropping 6.035 million head from the prior week, but still rising 1% from a year ago.

Those birds will head to market starting in late November.

The USDA’s expects 2024 broiler production to top 47 billion pounds, with the next guess out Friday, October 11th at Noon Eastern/11 Central.
