Broiler sets, placements stay ahead of year ago trend

Broiler sets and placements posted another year-to-year gain last week.

The USDA says 248.53 million eggs were set into incubation, down 105,000 on the week, but up 4% on the year, with the average hatchability falling fractionally to 78.9%.

That continues to imply a bigger supply of chicks for meat production.

Placements of 191.318 million head into meat production were 560,000 more than the previous week and 3% above a year ago, with those birds heading to market starting later this week.

Cumulative 2025 placements are 2% ahead of 2024.

The USDA’s next round of supply and demand estimates is out February 11th.
