Butter and cheese stocks grow in January

There was more cheese and butter in cold storage at the end of January.

USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says natural cheese stocks were up 1% from December, but down 6% from a year ago.

A total of 1.37 billion pounds of natural cheese was in cold storage as of January 31st, up from 1.35 billion pounds in December and down from the record 1.45 billion pounds in storage for January 2024.  Most of the cheese in storage was American style, with 777.5 million pounds, with other specialty cheeses totaling 572.9 million pounds and Swiss cheese accounting for 23.4 million pounds.

Butter stocks were up on the month and on the year, rising 26% since December and 9% year-over-year. As of January 31st, 270.2 million pounds of butter was in storage, compared to 214.2 million pounds in December and 247.5 million pounds a year ago.
