Butter prices remaining unusually high
A dairy economist says strong domestic demand has been driving the butter market.
Highground’s Betty Berning tells Brownfield, “Buyers have been extremely eager to buy whatever is available, so if there’s more butter for sale, it’s getting sold even at these higher prices.”
She says there have been unbelievable high prices since the spring.
“We’ve set new monthly, weekly, quarterly highs—you name it,” she says. “I don’t think anybody expected at the beginning of 2024 that we would have such a run of strong prices through the spring and summer and see butter over $3 per pound at this time of the year.”
Berning says it’s likely buyers have become more willing to secure supplies at elevated prices in the offseason as they try to avoid runups seen during the last two holiday seasons.
