The vice president of trade policy at the Canada Grains Council says upcoming review of the U.S. – Mexico – Canada (USMCA) agreement is critical for continued continental stability.

During a panel discussion at Commodity Classic, Mac Ross says all three countries have benefitted greatly from the pact.

“The USMCA has really been massive to the economic health of the agricultural sectors in our respective countries and ensuring the continued availability of food across our continental trading bloc,” he says.

He says USMCA has brought much-needed market access for producers, and his organization wants to see the agreement carry on.

“The bottom line from our sector’s perspective is that the USMCA protects the most integrated agri-food supply chain in the world.”  He says, “One that keeps grocery shelves stocked, secures jobs across our three countries, and strengthens North American food security.”

Ross says that Canada’s review of the agreement is virtually complete.

“And the messaging there really was reaffirmed support for the trilateral agreement and the stable rules-based North American trading environment that it’s created,” he says.

The USMCA review process is scheduled to begin July 1st.
