Cattle Australia CEO says drought turnaround has been significant

The CEO of Cattle Australia says the industry has rebounded following the treacherous drought three years ago. Dr. Chris Parker says the turnaround has been significant. “The prices has been very strong,” he says.  “The prices have just started to fall away a little bit this year, but may be coming back.  That’s all really solid.”

He tells Brownfield it’s been nice to see lush, green grass across the countryside — and that’s been good for Australia’s producers. “For the vast majority of Australian cattle producers, other than the bottom half of Western Australia, we’re seeing some really solid 6 to 12 months ahead,” he says.

Parker says the long-range forecast looks like favorable grass growing conditions.  “But if it doesn’t rain, it doesn’t grow grass,” he says.  “If we don’t grow grass, we don’t grow cattle.”

Brownfield interviewed Parker during the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s 2024 Young Cattlemen’s Conference.
