Cattle groups urge USDA against payment limits
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and 32 state cattle groups are urging Ag Secretary Perdue not to limit payments to cattle producers in the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. While “extremely grateful” for the support, their letter says the massive losses per head that have already occurred in all segments of the industry – and continued losses beyond 2020 — make rumors of payment limits “alarming.”
The cattle groups say their analysis shows a $125,000 per-commodity cap would limit payments for cow-calf operations with 505 head or more of cattle, stocker/backgrounder operations with a 781 head inventory and feed-yards with 606 head of feeder cattle.
The groups enclosed the study by Oklahoma State University showing the estimated total cattle industry losses at $13.6 billion dollars.
