Cattle industry sees momentum on wolves, grazing access, and markets
The president of the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association is celebrating several successes as 2025 ends.
Jake Thompson of Barnesville says the state increased the elk and wolf depredation funds.
“That was really really huge because we’d actually already run out, so there was a backlog. And they were able to address some of that, and hopefully have at least enough maybe to at least meet the needs going forward. And we’ve been trying to get that wolf delisted, and I think we’ve made some pretty good movement that way.”
Last week, legislation to delist the gray wolf from the Endangered Species List passed in the U.S. House and would need 60 votes in the Senate to reach President Trump’s desk.
Thompson tells Brownfield cattle producers are encouraged by talks involving more access to Conservation Reserve Program acreage.
“Because everyone wants to see a bigger cow herd, and how do we do that? And I don’t know if I truly believe that, but what I would love to see is utilization of a program like that that would incorporate new farms or even existing farms to have better resources then for pasture, hay, or whatever it is.”
He says the strength of the cattle market has been another success story this year.
Brownfield interviewed Thompson at the 2025 Minnesota Cattle Industry Convention in St. Cloud earlier this month.
It should have been evident by the many passing years of continuing Wolf Depredation instances, that include simply “thrill Kill”; that rules and laws for protections of Wolves for the idealistic “co-existence” acceptance, at great financial expenses of many Millions of Tax Payer Dollars, perhaps Billions?, is a failure that Wolves do suffer the dire consequences and will continue. Wolves are Carnivores, that domestic Dogs are descended from, and Dogs are documented responsible for killing us humans including Children, sometimes consuming them—www.dogsbite.org . The re-introduction of Wolves (Grey Wolves in our Western States, Mexican Wolves in our Southwest and Red Wolves into N. Carolina) without responsible consideration of containment inside wilderness areas, that do not have Domestic Livestock and resident Human habitation was an irresponsibility decision at the onset. There will come a time again when the free roaming of Wolves will meet greater anger, that currently exists, when a Human Child is Attacked, Killed and Consumed. You will find my research for a sensible Non-Lethal Confinement or Exclusion fence barrier; that also de-bunks the continued promotion of the color RED as a Fladry barrier, DC Electrified or not, that thru Contact Learned Training will mitigate some of the anger on both sides of the fence where Wolves continue to suffer the consequences regardless of laws to protect.
