Central Illinois harvest wrapping up

A central Illinois farmer says timely rains throughout the growing season produced very good crops.

Ken Franklin, who grows corn and soybeans in Christian County, tells Brownfield…

“We’re happy with the yields.”  He says, “Our corn was probably the most consistent we’ve ever had. It was all probably in around that 15 to 20 bushels above our APH.”

He says his soybeans were good, but the dry fall had an impact.

“Had they not dried down quite as quick in that September blowtorch it probably would add probably five bushel or so to it.”  He says, “They were just so dry and uneven.  We started cutting on day one at 9% beans. That was maybe a little disappointing, but they were still really good beans.”

Franklin says with harvest complete, and some recent rain, he’s now focusing on tillage work before applying fall anhydrous fertilizer once conditions are right.
