Cheesemaker sees farmer’s struggle with milk prices first-hand
A cheesemaker says the down dairy economy is continuing to hurt farmers.
John Moran from Dairy State Cheese in Rudolph, Wisconsin says he sees the struggles with his milk suppliers first-hand “We’ve added some new farmers. Some farmers have gone out of business.”
Moran tells Brownfield the money farmers make for milk is way too low but says fixing that will mean higher consumer prices for dairy products. “I think everything has to stay within reason. If things get too high, people start looking for alternatives. You know, money is tight with everybody.”
Moran hopes efforts to market more cheese and other dairy products pays off, which will help processors and farmers. He says, “The farmers? They’re the hardest working people in the United States as far as I’m concerned.”
Moran spoke with Brownfield at the Cheese Industry Conference in Madison, Wisconsin.
